Rebecca, it’s appalling how often yt people get away with things we’d be reprimanded or fired for. I was in a different career than yours, so my situation was different. I decided early on that I would maintain as much freedom of choice as possible. Because of my reputation for doing quality work and excellent presentations, for example,
my coworkers and superiors often thought they could persuade me to serve on committees and such by flattering me. They would be shocked when I would decline, not realizing how transparent they were. Some would keep pleading with me because they knew if I took on the task, I’d do a great job. More importantly, it would make them look good or even enable them to take credit for it. It gave me pleasure to know my worth so I wasn’t sucked into their schemes. I retired after a 40-year career with satisfaction and joy that I had a positive impact on many lives.
